    Responsibilities

    Hexagon is seeking an experienced IP attorney or patent agent with broader IP background to support the company’s business of software based solutions in all aspects of intellectual property, including, but not limited to, patent management, trademark prosecution and maintenance, copyright registration and related advice, transactional support, licensing, litigation support, invention identification, inventor support, internal trainings, freedom-to-operate analyses and managing the relation to law firms. The ideal candidate will be proactive, diligent, organized and have excellent business acumen. This position will be based in Madison, Alabama and will directly report to the Group Head of IP and indirectly to the Deputy General Counsel of Hexagon.

    The position may be expanded in the future to a role that includes coordinating and counselling other Hexagon entities in the North America region and supporting the group’s IP team in US specific issues.

    Qualifications

    • Juris Doctorate and/or qualification as Patent Agent, preferably with admission to at least one State bar and/or the USPTO  
    • At least 5 years of relevant IP experience 
    • Strong technical experience with software technology and related IP issues
    • Technical degree in computer science, electrical engineering, physics, mathematics, or computer engineering (other degrees or extensive on-the-job background will also be considered) 
    • Experience advising about and negotiating a variety of agreements 
    • Self-motivated with outstanding interpersonal skills and ability to communicate complex concepts and issues effectively with all levels of management 
    • Ability to multi-task and work quickly and collaboratively to meet established deadlines 
    • Strong written and oral communication skills with enthusiasm to engage with our R&D teams and also Hexagon's international IP team members
    • Ability to add value to the IP and Legal teams
    • Some international and domestic travel will be required.  Expected travel is 10%

    Preferred

    • Experience working in a multi-national corporation setting with international IP experience
    • Experience drafting and prosecuting patents in a law firm or in-house legal department and current awareness of software patent case law and practice
    • Working knowledge of data rights and privacy laws
    • Experience with intellectual property issues arising in artificial intelligence, blockchain, cloud computing, SaaS, PaaS, and or autonomous vehicles
    • Familiarity with open source software issues
